Alexandra Shelton

When was the first time you rode a horse? My Grandmother took me when I was three, but I don't really remember it. I was five when my family and I stopped at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington. That's when I became instantly hooked.
How long have you been at Pony Brook Stables?
We moved to Lafayette 4 years ago and I’ve been riding with Wilene ever since.
What have you learned since you started riding? Taking care of horses. The horses need help with things. I love everything about taking care of them - feeding, grooming, washing, and mucking the stalls.
What do you want to be when you grow up? A veterinarian. I went with Wilene once to Purdue University to the vet medicine school, and I got to see a horse go through a dental exam. It was awesome.
Who is your favorite pony? Nugget. I also call him Nuggy for short. I love riding and taking care of him. He is the prettiest pony that I have ever seen.
What is your favorite part about riding? I love being with the animals. I will do anything just to spend time with the horses. I could spend all day at Pony Brook just taking care of the ponies and spending time with Wilene.
What is your biggest accomplishment in riding? Learning to jump. Also, I came in 3rd place at a White County show against High League competitive riders in June 2011.
Do you have any advice for new riders?
Even though cantering seems scary, it’s actually easier because it’s not so bouncy. Cantering is actually a really smooth ride. Also, if you do what Wilene says, you will have more fun riding.
