Your heels are like anchors helping your leg stretch down and around your horse. If your heels are up your leg is not secure and your knee raises up towards the top of the saddle. When this happens the rider usually falls forward and into the "fetal" position. This is a false "safety" position. This position is very precarious and is more likely to create imbalance and a fall. Therefore, riders hear the comment "heels down" a great deal while learning to ride. With heels down the rider is most likely to stay in the saddle.
